This is so cute and so perfect!  Noel is full of love and excitement, Andy’s confused, Dolly is annoyed but not trying to resist and Smooth likes like a kid gazing up at his big brother…

This makes me happy and I’m not sure why.

Aww, a BBQ candid! Before the breakdown and burnout.  ;-)

Oh.

Oh my.

Oh man, this scene. THIS SCENE.

So funny, and so adorable (squeaky, flustered Noel is never anything less than perfect), and yet…

When I watch this scene, I can’t help but think of all the people and critics and yes, even fans, who crowd in on Noel, and criticize him, and are always making new demands, and questioning what he does, and refusing to be satisfied, and making snap judgments before they see the whole picture, and are impatient for more new stuff, and twisting his words, and and and and.

Because that’s what’s going on in this scene.  Noel just wants to give everybody something nice, but none of them can accept it on those terms.  They won’t sit back and let him work.  They’re all crowding in on him, second-guessing his choices, telling him how they would do it better, pointing out what he’s doing wrong, complaining that he’s not catering to their individual needs enough, pestering him with questions, impatiently demanding the things they want now, predicting that he’s going to fail because he can’t handle the pressure—all of it, chipping away at his confidence until he’s so self-conscious and stressed-out that he DOES have a breakdown.

And then he literally gets burnt out, and is afraid that the fire’s destroyed all of his characters, too.

You’re as much of a genius as ever, Sandra! These are wonderful.  :D

Watching this scene reminded me of that story Noel told on Buzzcocks, about how his kite flew away from him when he was a little boy, and he cried all the way home, still carrying the handle.   <3
