In which Vince is willing to do stupid things so that Howard doesn’t have to, because he reckons that in doing so Howard will appreciate him a little more.
This isn’t an episode, this is a Freudian analysis of Howard’s subconcious. Think about the pipe-smoking, the banana, the strangely tight costume, crumb-eye… Howard literally tries to lock away his confusion about Vince, only to abandon Gideon to rush back and find Vince has seduced certain death. That’s all before Charlie enters the picture!
Just came home to my reliable internet connection and found this. So happy. This is a very interesting episode, as it opens with Vince’s barely-contained hostility toward Simon McFarnaby. Then somehow it ends up being about Howard’s jealousy of Vince.

(The sad thing is that it is all coming from within. Vince puts his emotions into fashion terms when he can’t articulate them, and he puts them into his clothes, too. His punk phase is a product of being ignored, being told he’s a simpleton, feeling not good enough for three series, even though he’s always the one who has to be responsible. He always has to pick Howard up, even though in this episode he knocks him down. And he’s had enough of it. The trouble is, though, is then their dynamic gets flipped around and he’s the one who needs to be saved. Oh, Vince.)

I love, love, love to watch them tell this story. Noel’s face while he watches… it’s a thing of beauty. He knows the tale; he’s heard it many a time before; hell, it’s basically his story too, but he’s still so anticipatory and seems absolutely fascinated by what Ju’s saying. He’s already laughing from the start, but he’s trying not to because he doesn’t want to detract from the story; he wants to give Julian room to deliver the line just right. And the way he laughs at the end, so unreserved and with his whole body… I get the impression it’s not so much the punchline itself that’s cracking him up as he’s delighted that Julian is impersonating him, his character, the character that really seems to have been created as an outlet for their homosexyness.
Noel does look pleased as punch! Everything Hannah said. So cute, he’s so anxious to hear how Ju is going to tell it. <3
